A few years ago a friend suggested I go to Hico, Texas, a small town a couple of hours south of Dallas, for pie. He said the diner there had the best pie in the world. Well, you know how we are. The whole family (son, daughter, their spouses, and 2 grandchildren) loaded up and drove to Hico. We each had a different flavor of pie, and it was all decadently delicious. But more than the pie, I remember the atmosphere. It was deer hunting season and the diner was jam packed with hunters. We were the only ones not in camouflage. We kind of stood out in our city slicker outfits from Dallas. The owner kindly came by our table to visit and then sent out a piece of her birthday cake. It was Italian cream and truly the best in the world. We still talk about that cake. Leaving the diner, we spotted Wiseman House Chocolates across the street. As I recall, we sampled and enjoyed most everything in the shop. It was a very good trip.
So, quelle surprise when I saw the Wiseman House table at the Dallas Chocolate Festival. I chatted with the ladies working the behind the table and had a few samples. Kevin, the owner, came over and invited me to their Choctoberfest on October 1st. He is very personable and very passionate about his chocolates. I had the pleasure of sitting by him and his son Sean that evening at a dinner hosted by Kent Lyon of Guittard.
But back to the chocolates. I had the best-selling Wild Woman truffle. I felt it was named for me but was not able to confirm that. If you are a fan of dark chocolate, you don’t want to miss this. I swooned over the peanut butter meltaway; it truly melted in my mouth. I then chose a piece of crunchy almond toffee for contrast. Oh my! I hated to leave that table.
If you can, it would be fun to attend Kevin’s Choctoberfest on October 1. If not, go anytime. Where else can you find Wild Woman truffles and the Billy the Kid Museum within a couple of blocks? You can belly up to the antique bar and have a sasaparilla with your Wild Woman.
