Sugarless deLite is a sweet delight! It’s a haven for those who cannot or do not wish to consume sugar. Rick, the owner, greets every customer that comes in; most of them by name. He has operated Sugarless deLite for 28 years. It’s quite obvious his passion for the business has not dulled. When I told him I write a chocolate blog, he immediately said, “Good; let me show you around!”
Hannah, my granddaughter gypsy-in-training, was with me. Rick showed us cases of sugarless chocolates, cookies, pies, cakes, and cheesecakes. We loved the samples of sugarless brownies, and before we could finish those, he shared a few different chocolates with us. I was not expecting the liquid center when I bit into a cherry cordial. I shrieked as it dripped down my chin and onto my blouse. Miss Hannah giggled, and Rick continued to talk as if nothing had happened. He continued to greet happy customers that kept coming and going. It was very busy for a Wednesday afternoon.
I made my selections to take home. The salted caramel was my favorite; then the dark chocolate caramel turtles. We walked out with two pounds ($26.99 per pound) of assorted creams, caramels, chocolate covered almonds, turtles, truffles, almond bark, and cherry cordials. Rick, in a confidential tone of voice, warned us not to eat them all at one time because of the effect maltitol (sugar alcohol) has on the digestive system. I told him I know all about that. In case you don’t know, sweet reader, if you consume too much maltitol, which is most always present in sugarless chocolate, you will spend a lot of time in the bathroom.
Ok, since I’m being forthright, I’ll tell you my palate has not developed an appreciation for sugar free chocolates. So I had a group tasting including a friend who is completely sugar free and, of course, Casey, my son, my best taster. We all agreed the chocolates were nice, but not outstanding. We each had our favorites, but some tasters felt their sample must have been a bit old. Casey called me the next morning and told me he felt cleansed; he felt great!
Still, if you are one that cannot have sugar, I think Sugarless deLite will be a Godsend for you. The variety of products is impressive (sugar free, low carb, and gluten free items; everything from pasta and hamburger buns to Margarita mix and sugarless pancakes). And you just will not find a more hospitable owner than Rick. Maybe you should try their sugar free frozen yogurt; it seemed to be a popular item when we were there.
