Hello, lover – chocolate lover, that is.
If you find yourself shuffling off to Buffalo, be sure to stop in at Alethea’s. It’s in the quaint village of Williamsville, about 10 miles from downtown Buffalo, close to the Country Club of Buffalo, and on your way to the world wonder of Niagara Falls. Quaint village, historic white wooden plank building, a striped awning over the verandah – it all appears very retro. But this is no mom and pop shop.
They do offer old-fashioned candies alongside trendy truffles, such as the spicy ginger ones. All are handmade in their on-site factory. But the big deal here is their renowned Sponge Candy. This gypsy had never experienced sponge candy chocolates so I had to try one. Otherwise, it would have been hard to choose from the tray of samples offered to their guests.
Sponge Candy is a local favorite that I heard about from a Buffalo native now living in my hometown of Dallas, Texas. He’s raved about it for years, so I was very happy to finally find one. Now I fully understand the fascination with it. “They” say you have to try it to understand it, and that’s the truth. Mine was a wonderful bite into a decadently rich dark chocolate-coated sponge center. At first it seemed crunchy, then I got the flavor of caramelized sugar and molasses, and it quickly melted away in my mouth. Almost magic! (So I had a few more.)
I also need to tell you, as you might expect, they have a nice line of buffalo chocolates – yes, shaped like buffalos. My favorite was the dark chocolate-coated Sponge Candy Buffalo – the best of both worlds! Hope you can visit Alethea’s and enjoy this phenomenon yourself.
Travel safely in good health and good chocolate.
